Kutajarishta is an ayurvedic self-generated alcoholic preparation and is popularly being used in clinical practice in conditions like diarrhoea, amoebic dysentery, malabsorption syndrome etc. The fresh stem bark of Kutaja is the primary ingredient of this formulation which is a known drug for Ayurvedic physicians and is used popularly in diarrhoea, dysentery and other gastrointestinal manifestations.

Modern pharmacological research carried out on Holarrhena antidysenterica bark confirms its activity against both acute and chronic amoebic dysentery. It is also found that this drug has potent immune-stimulatory effects. Antidiarrheal activity, antimotility and the antisecretory effect of Kutajarishta have been established in castor oil and magnesium sulphate-induced diarrhoea models.

In conditions like diarrhoea, amoebic dysentery, malabsorption syndrome and Irritable bowel syndrome intestinal motility and absorption are disturbed. In Grahani, Atisara and Pravahika, wherever intestinal motility is affected, Apana Vayu is vitiated. Ayurvedic classics have mentioned that in the situations of vitiated Apana Vayu, medicine has to be administered in Prag Bhakta time (just before food).

It is the best Amapachak and Stambhak Dravya. It is useful in diarrhoea, controls excessive watery stools, corrects the function of Agni being Deepak-Pachak, and tones intestinal muscles. It is classically indicated in Atisara, Jeerna Atisara, Rakta Atisara, Pravahika, Sangrahani, and Antra Shaithilya. It is also beneficial in strengthening the digestive system and helps in resolving various digestive disorders like Anorexia, fever, gastritis, vomiting, flatulence, abdominal colic etc.
