Kottakkal Haridrakhandam is a classical ayurvedic preparation which is used to treat most skin diseases. Haridrakhandam is a very well-known medication in ayurveda for treating a variety of disorders like skin itching, urticaria or hives, rough skin, allergic reaction etc.

The main ingredient in Haridrakhandam is Turmeric or Haldi which is popular for its extreme benefits in improving and treating skin disorders. The Haridrakhandam Is prepared as follows- In a pan, ghee is taken and melted. Add fine haldi powder to it. Heat it for approximately 5 minutes on low-medium heat. Mix continuously to achieve a stable solid consistency like mass. Switch off the heat flame when the haldi odour appears and If the heat flame is not turned off at the appropriate time, it may burn.

In another wide-mouthed vessel, combine pre-boiled milk and sugar candy and add fried ghee to it and continue heating on low heat. Stir everything together thoroughly. The mass begins to solidify as you continue to heat it. At one point, take a small mass with a spatula, allow it to cool, and rub it between your fingers to make threads to check the quality of the formulation.

Now put a small piece of this mass in water with a spatula, it quickly solidifies and settles at the bottom of the container. There will be no discernible odour during the initial stages of heating. In the end, you can feel the haldi and ghee aroma as both of these things are fully saturated with each other.

After this turn off the flame and stop further heating if you see all these things. In the final step, mix the powdered prakshepa dravyas firmly. While constantly stirring, add this powder mixture to the haldi, ghee, milk & sugar candy. In a fraction of time, the mass will gradually be converted into granules shape.

The traditional recipe of Haridrakhandam is mentioned in Bhaishajya Ratnavali (Sheetapitta Udarda Kotha Adhikari). This recipe is formed by choosing all of the herbal ingredients in their purest form. Haridrakhandam preparation necessitates a thorough examination of the quantity, time, and heat required.
