Dasamula is a collection of ten carefully chosen plants whose roots when taken together help in pacifying the vaata and Kapha to cure issues relating to pain, cough, and disorders relating to the nervous systems. Dasamula is a collection of 2 different types of collection of mula, fir is Laghupanchmula and the second is Brihatpanchmula.
Now, Laghupanchmula includes five aushadhs from the shrub classification of plants and Brihatpanchmula includes five drugs from the tree classification of plants. These two are taken together from the Dasamula collection.
Now, these ten drugs can be consumed together in many forms, mostly it is sold as a churna for helping all the issues relating to the respiratory tract, there, it is advised to take this churna/ powder along with honey to not cause any accidental irritation of the respiratory tract by mistakenly inhaling it, while at the same time controlling the amount of Kapha that might be a causative factor of the cough or other respiratory ailments.
This churna boiled in water turns into a kwath which when given as an enema controls the direction of flow of vaata in the body which helps control many physical pains that are happening in the body and also many nerve disorders in the body. Now comes the Dasamulaharitaki Leham- Dasamulaharitaki is made by taking the 10 roots and coarsely grinding them into an uneven powdered form.
This uneven powder is poured into water and then boiled till only a quarter amount of water from the original value is left. This concoction is then strained to remove the solid waste of roots from this concoction. This strained water which is now obtained from the process is called Dasamula kwath. Now add haritaki to it.
After this, add jaggery to it and heat it till a semisolid consistency or consistency like jam is achieved. Then you cool this semisolid jam down till it is lukewarm only. Add the rest of the ingredients mentioned in the composition section and then mix them till it is uniform and ready for use.
This is the difference between Dasamula and Dasamulaharitaki. Dasamulaharitaki is further processing of the Dasamula drugs which makes it a lot superior to the standard Dasamula churna, or kwath because these two have a shelf life of only 2 months and 1 day specifically but this avaleham is capable of lasting for 1 year without any preservatives.
Other than that, the drugs that are added later on as prakshepa makes the whole avaleh a lot more potent with the addition of trikatu and more. This connection here can take care of respiratory, cardiac, nervous, digestive and more issues when taken as a supportive medicine or taken properly under the guidance of a well-practiced vaidya
